Learn how to use Canva’s Magic Layers feature to turn a flat AI-generated PNG or JPG into an editable Canva design. You’ll produce a layered version of the image so you can fix small details without regenerating the whole thing. Processing takes about 30 to 60 seconds once you run Magic Layers.
You’ll build a reusable workflow for taking a flat AI-generated image and splitting it into editable layers inside Canva, so you can change text, move objects, swap colors, and fix details without starting over.
Magic Layers may struggle with overly complex patterns, very small text, real-life photos, or photorealistic generated images. It only works with PNG and JPG files, so convert PDFs into images before uploading them.
Start with an AI-generated image that is close to what you want but has one detail you need to fix, like a wrong date, misspelled word, or outdated tagline.
In the example workflow, a product launch ad for headphones looked good, but the launch date was wrong. Instead of re-prompting and risking lower image quality, you’ll use Canva to edit the existing image.
Magic Layers may struggle with overly complex patterns or very small text, so don’t get discouraged if your first try does not work perfectly.
There are two ways to open Magic Layers in Canva.
Once you run Magic Layers, Canva will process the image for about 30 to 60 seconds. It reads the layout, identifies elements like headlines, subheadlines, product images, and background patterns, then separates them into individual layers.
In the headphones ad example, Canva split the design into four clean layers: the main headline, the subheadline with the launch date, the product photo, and the background. It also matched fonts and colors so the text could be edited separately.
Magic Layers only works with PNG and JPG files. If you want to edit a PDF, convert it into an image first, then upload it into Canva.
Click any text layer to edit it like live text. You can change a date, rewrite a tagline, or fix a typo without regenerating the image.
Click an object layer to move it, resize it, or delete it. You can also drop in a new product photo while keeping the existing layout.
If you are using a real-life photo or a photorealistic generated image, Magic Layers may not work as well. You can try Canva’s background removal tool to separate the foreground and background.
